This winter it has been rare to see shadows on the ground when you wake up in the morning; it has been a VERY dark and wet season…either lots of snow and ice or more common around here…rain, rain and more rain! Therefore I jumped at the chance to get some photos taken with shadows in them and to get a bit of fresh air as well…without having to tote an umbrella around.

A stroll along the water
It is a nice feeling to know that you don’t have to travel to an exotic location to end up with a lovely group of pictures…sometimes it is enough to look in your local area and you can find something nice. In this case the area around Höje River just on the outskirts of the city of Lund. The city in their wisdom has decided to preserve the area around the river from development and it is such a nice experience to walk along the water, take in the scenery and hear the birds sing.

For the past three years the number of public events have been somewhat limited (for obvious reasons) so seeing more and more festivals, concerts and other public events take place is a good sign for sure! That’s why I suggested to my dad we go to the recently re-kindled Harbor Festival in Limhamn (a part of the city of Malmö in Sweden), an event we’d gone to a few times before the plague descended upon the world.

The fall color season hit us with a vengeance this year, bringing out the yellows, reds and browns with full force. I hadn’t really been out all that much shooting those colors for a few years, because I felt that I’d done it already and I was just trying to re-heat a souffle. This year though I guess I had been “away” from that sort of photography enough that it felt somewhat new and interesting again. Hence October of 2021 had lots of fall colors among my 365 images.

The older I get the faster time flies by…it’s hard to believe one sixth of 2021 is already over. I guess we’re still in some sort of holding pattern, still waiting for a change from March 2020 so that the “real” 2021 can start.
The second month of the year, this short month, was full of weather contrasts. We both had warm-ish spring days as well as bitterly cold days (and nights especially when the mercury…or whatever’s in thermometers these days) plunged to -12 C (10 F). That made for some rather unusual winter scenes here in southern Sweden where it usually doesn’t get that cold for any prolonged period of time beyond a day or three.

There are a few reasonably “safe” spaces for people to hang out at now that we’re supposed to stay away from each other for the sake of everyone’s health - nature being one of them. Of course that only works if not “everyone” picks the same spot in nature to visit at the same time…which is what it felt like a few weekends ago when I went to the Söderåsen National Park in central Skåne, a very scenic area.

Last weekend I had the privilege of going to the town of Ängelholm (just over an hour’s drive from where I live) to see the exhibition of some photographers I knew. They all showed different styles of photos and I liked a lot of what I saw and it was inspiration to get a show of my own put together at some point! After the show my constant photo companion (Dad) and I went down to the Rönne river that flows through the town for a bit of a stroll.
Read MoreAs the river runs
Just south of the city of Lund the river Höje (well more of a creek these days) runs through the fields and narrow woodlands along it. It's also a nice place for a stroll or a jog if you're so inclined. I chose the first of those two options, and captured these photos along the banks of the creek.

Starting the new photo year
We’re just over a week into the new year and I’ve taken my DSLR out once so far. I can’t say that I am happy with that amount of photography, but it just hasn’t felt that interesting to be out there with it yet. So it rests comfortably in its backpack for the time being. No doubt it’ll see plenty of action soon enough though...once the weather improves just a bit.
The photos in this post are from the beach at Ribersborg in Malmö on a pretty cold January morning, but before we got the recent dusting of snow. The winds were pretty fierce so my dad and I didn’t stay very long. It’s hard to operate a camera when your hands feel like they turn into icicles! We took a brief walk over to the dog park area nearby and saw a few little critters who weren’t bothered at all by the ice cold winds. They were too busy having a good time with their other four-legged friends, old and new.
On the Instagram 365 project
I am now on day 10 of my Instagram 365 project and I’ve updated the page here on the site with photos from the first week, with many more to come as the year progresses. I am pretty content with the photos so far, but it feels like I’ve not been experimental enough with the cell phone camera yet. It can handle much poorer lighting conditions than my previous phone could, so I am not as limited in what I can do with it. Hopefully as the year progresses I can explore that more! I’ve got 356 more opportunities to do so before December 31st, so that ought to be enough! :-)
Fall Colors in the Park
It's that time of the year again, when pretty much everything green in nature is turning yellow, red or brown and it's pretty much a photographer's "duty" to be out there to take pictures of the abundance of colors! I've certainly done my fair share of fall colors photos in the past, but there's always room for a bit more.
These pictures are from one of the parks (and cemetery) in Malmö, Sweden where the colors certainly were pretty and people were out enjoying the scenery!
