It’s been three years since the last time the Irish and the wanna-be-Irish-for-a-day of all ages in Copenhagen could celebrate March 17th, a.k.a. St.Patrick’s Day, but this year it was once again possible to gather to dress up in various shades of green, white and orange (but mostly green).
According to traditions it was time for many to participate in the three-legged Charity race, put on by Shamrock Love, between a few Irish pubs in the Danish capital, starting at Kennedy’s Irish Pub near the Tycho Brahe Planetarium, and ending up at The Dubliner at the Amager Square. I’ve come to this event to photograph since 2012 and it is just a fun event to experience. This year though it felt even better to be there, because we’ve not been able to do it for the past two years.
And when the racers were done with the 2.6 kilometer (1.6 miles) race they ended up at the Dubliner pub where they received a very warm and friendly welcome…and some more beverages for their parched throats.
Another part of the St.Patrick’s Day celebrations take place at Rådhuspladsen (City Hall square) where there’s music and dancing and face painting for the kids, followed by a parade (stpatricksdayparade.dk) through the streets, led by “St.Patrick” himself. This year I didn’t stay for the parade, since it was pretty cold and rainy, but I did snap a few pictures at the square at least before it was time to head home to Sweden.
All in all it was a great experience to be back in the Danish capital to shoot at the Irish celebrations and I can’t wait to do it again next year…preferably with slightly warmer and drier weather!
