This weekend I went to a local science fiction convention with my 13 year old nephew and much against my own character I didn’t take a camera with me. Weird huh? Well...not really. We were there two years ago, and then I tried to do both “baby” sitting and photography and that’s just not doable. Also, given how insanely crowded the place gets it wouldn’t really be possible for me to take any good photos had I been there on my own. My DSLR is just too big for that.
I’m okay with not taking any pictures at this time since we were there for my nephew primarily and he enjoyed himself a lot...even though there was nowhere near enough Doctor Who merchandise to satisfy his urge to see it. I actually agree with him on that...a few years ago when I was there without him (during Matt Smith’s time as the Doctor) there was a lot more of that stuff. Why? I have no idea, but it was pretty devoid of Doctor Who merchandise except for posters and t-shirts.
What was there in abundance though was Star Wars stuff. A lot of it. Everywhere. No wonder Disney were happy to acquire this cash cow given how many people bought and walked around sporting Star Wars shirts and other things! Come to think of it, with all the Avengers/Marvel shirts on visitors and in the booths I guess Disney is making a lot of money from them too.
I’m not quite clear on why they’d invited Samantha Fox (yep, the singer from the 80s) to this con, but she did indeed sit there writing autographs to people. And no, I didn’t fancy paying 15 dollars for her or any of the other celebrities’ autographs. It was cool though to see Amanda Tapping from Stargate and John Rhys-Davies (a.k.a. Gimli) there at the table. The line waiting for his autograph was A LOT longer than all the other celebrities combined, so I assume the Lord of the Rings/Indiana Jones fans were in the majority!
