January is now over and we’re into the shortest month of the year. This month my grand total of photos taken has been the lowest in years, and I am fine with that. I’ve written several blog posts now about how the obsession with shooting I used to have up until the fall of 2014 hasn’t returned. That is okay, because I am still very interested in photography as a subject...or topic. I definitely read books and magazines and watch videos online about photographers’ works and techniques, I’ve just not felt the urge to go out there and apply the skills or ideas presented in these various types of media.
Part of the reason for that I think is the weather. Just like last year January was a ghastly gray month! I don’t think there was sunshine for more than one or two days at the most! Having nothing but that bland gray light is not exactly inspiriring for photography! The image at the top of this post is from January 2009, but it could just as easily have been taken during the month of January 2015. The weather has been pretty much identical.
Yes, I know it’s great light for taking portraits and such, but I don’t really do that sort of photography. Not yet anyway, but I might later in the year. I am certainly open to it.
In the meantime I’ve watched quite a lot of photography related web TV episodes (is that what you call it these days?) on YouTube, with the very excellent The Art of Photography as one of the best out there. I’ve written about this one before on my blog, before I did the move to Squarespace format, but I feel I want to mention it again, because it is such a good show. It’s one of the few photography related shows on YouTube that isn’t gear, gear, gear all the time. In fact it is _rarely_ gear, but rather just like the title of the show says, the art...and the artistry involved. Very strongly recommended!
Hopefully by this time next Sunday I’ll actually have some new photos to show! Also I hope I can be rid of this cold by then...as much as I enjoyed sounding like a movie trailer voice I'd rather not have the coughing and weezing stage I'm at today! ;-)
